The Dubai tram

Public transport in Al Sufouh, Dubai
The Dubai Tram is the first tramway project outside Europe to operate with a ground-based electric power supply, eliminating overhead cables. Delivered by the BESIX–Alstom consortium, the project includes 10 kilometres of track and 13 stations.

Project overview

Designed as a flagship public transport initiative, the Dubai Tram runs along Al Sufouh Road and through the Dubai Marina district, enhancing connectivity in an urban area that is now fully developed. Despite demanding timelines, the project team successfully delivered an operational tramline ahead of its official inauguration, demonstrating strong coordination, technical expertise and commitment to excellence.

Scope of works

The BESIX–Alstom consortium was responsible for the design and construction of the tramway infrastructure, including the installation of 10 kilometres of tram tracks and 13 fully equipped tram stops with corresponding stations. Particular attention was given to integrating a ground-based electric supply system, a first outside Europe, requiring high technical precision. The works were executed within a challenging timeframe, mobilising a large, skilled workforce to meet stringent delivery targets.
